Labor’s first evaluation mission under the APPD program took place in August 2006 in Indonesia.
Date: 01 September 2006
Indonesia’s 10 most prominent parties (based on 2004 parliamentary election vote percentages) were targeted to participate. The consultations focused on the possibility of undertaking targeted democracy assistance programs in Indonesia either bilaterally or through multilateral organisations.
Each of the parties contacted expressed their desire for stronger relations with Australia and the Australian Labor Party. Furthermore, they were eager to participate in training programs to facilitate the transition to democracy and improve policy development.
As Indonesia’s political parties strive to build their internal democracies and improve constituency outreach, providing technical assistance on campaign strategies will be a crucial framework for our engagement with Indonesia.
