The Rudd Labor Government has stayed true to its commitments on Iraq, to withdraw Australian combat troops from Iraq in 2008 and maintain our enduring commitment to the security and welfare of the Iraqi people.
Date: 08 August 2008
Despite Labor’s opposition to the war in Iraq there can be no argument that Australia has a moral obligation, having been a participant in the War on Saddam Hussein’s regime, to contribute to the reconstruction and stabilisation of the country.
The Australian Defence Force has worked tirelessly in Southern Iraq over recent years to provide the security and stability needed to allow the Iraqi people to take control of their own destiny.
Members of the Overwatch Battle Group, have now bedded-down security in both al-Muthana and Dhi Qar provinces. At the same time, the Australian Army Training Team – Iraq has trained and built capacity within the Iraqi Security Forces, giving them the skills they need to enforce the rule of law in their country. With these jobs done we are pleased to be able to honour our commitment to bring these troops home.
The Government remains committed to a secure and stable Iraq. Our frigate in the Gulf will continue to protect the sea lanes and Iraq’s oil infrastructure. Our P-3 Orion aircraft will continue their surveillance work and our Security Detachment will continue to protect our Diplomats in Baghdad. These elements along with some headquarters, logistics and liaison staff reflect our continued commitment to Iraq and the Iraqi people.
Our soldiers have worked hard to ensure that the Iraqi people can look to the future with optimism and this Government honours their service.
